Battle of the Bands 9/9/16 Schenectady
First off, just the name of this event is such a turn-off, conjuring up headbanging and metal and underage drink/pukers. I would never go to this! except that Anthony Fallacaro posted that he was playing here. He's the absolute opposite of hair band.
So yes, I changed plans from Helsinki and the Justin Townes Earle/Anthony D'Amato double bill and went to Schenectady instead. Yes, I know that is some kind of crazy. EQX was on board though, if that's any saving grace, or if you're questioning my sanity.
First up was the ? anti-punk band American Runaways, who said this was their first gig playing together. Did some originals, and covered Green Day, Jimmy Eat World, etc. They were pretty good and got the evening kicked off in a good way.
Then a break and the second band, who we skipped when we walked down to Center Street Pub for a snack and some good beer - the beer truck at the event wasn't selling anything we wanted to drink! Then we had a pretty significant discussion over Skinny Atlas Kolsch and whatever PM was drinking. Sorry, if you know you won't like my answers, why do you keep asking the questions? Why keep pushing for the unsatisfying answer? The horse is still dead - must we keep beating it?
We got back midway through the third band, Better by Morning. They were ok, I was distracted, and can't remember much of their set...although they did end up winning.
Then Anthony Fallacaro, who doesn't play nearly enough around here, and deserves to be known! Plus he's a nice guy.
Then last year's winner played a set. I forget her name; she's a pretty talented 15 year old... but started off with five rock girl anthem covers in a row (i.e.Heart, ugh). Instantly checked out, ready to go now!
You know I never go out for covers - it's like soy bacon. Give me something real when I see music.
