Bogardus

This plaque is on 63 State Street. Such gorgeous architecture. I have steeple envy.

Anneke Bogardus inherited some of the most important land in Manhattan (the world, now) when her husband died. After she died, her 62 acres were snatched from her heirs by England, since they defeated the Dutch. But while she was alive, cash poor and land rich, with 9 children to support.

So lovely for the times.  In a complete twist of Bogardus's,(Bogardi?) this is the Bogardus I always think of first. I love this corny movie.
