Flings by Justin Taylor
Short stories can be great, and they're short!
Still, it took me forever to read this book. Months. Renewed it from the library until they wouldn't let me renew it again, and I still ended up with an overdue fine. I'd read a story or two, and just put it down. I wasn't really drawn in, and didn't feel compelled to continue to the next story.
I had read his previous book of stories 'Everything Here is the Best Thing Ever', and liked it a lot. (Did I ever post about that book?)
'Flings' was on some list of books you have to read, but just a few things to think about later.
I like that line about not hurting someone.
...throttling the life from the world/ She was nobody's savior...
From the same story: I love the way he describes Abigail's reaction - 'like a needle between her guts' when she forgets to ignore him. Equally interesting is the description of Cal - 'a wall masquerading as a window' - I love that, so few words say so much.
